How to edit text in a PDF without Acrobat

Updated November 2, 2026

A PDF is designed to look the same everywhere, which is also why it feels hard to change. You don't need paid software to fix a typo or update a date: here is how to do it in your browser, and what to do when the text can't be selected.

Edit existing text, step by step

Open the PDF editor and drop your file in the box. It opens right in your browser and is not uploaded.

  • Choose the "Edit text" tool, then click the line you want to change.
  • Type your correction. Text after your change moves along with it on the same line.
  • Use undo if needed, then click "Download" to save the new PDF.

Check the result before you send it

Open the downloaded file in your usual PDF reader and zoom in on the lines you changed. If a line became longer, make sure it still fits inside its margin or table cell. Keep your original file until you are happy with the new version.

What if you can't click the text?

Many PDFs made from a scanner or a phone photo contain only a picture of the page. There are no letters to edit, so clicking does nothing. You can still cover the old text with a white rectangle and add new text on top of it.

Keep in mind that this only hides what is underneath visually. Before sharing a confidential document, don't rely on a covered area to remove sensitive information.

When not to edit a PDF

Only change documents you have the right to change. Altering an official document, a signed contract or an invoice to mislead someone can be illegal. If you need an official correction, ask whoever issued the document.
